Inmigrantes venezolanos traen sabores de casa a México

“Me dio mucho gusto, porque hacía muchos años que no comía comida venezolana”, dijo Fabiana Márquez junto a un vendedor cuyos productos la conectaron con su antiguo país.

Los ojos de Fabiana Márquez se iluminaron después de que dio el primer bocado a un sabroso pan en forma de media luna relleno de jamón y queso. Los recuerdos inundaron su mente. La inmigrante venezolana no había comido un “cachito” en casi cinco años hasta que se topó con un vendedor frente a la embajada de su país en México.

Márquez dejó su tierra natal sudamericana en 2017 en medio de una crisis social, política y humanitaria que ahora ha llevado a más de 6 millones a migrar a través del continente y más allá. Ha trabajado como niñera, ama de llaves, camarera y en otros trabajos para llegar a fin de mes, principalmente en las afueras de México. En el proceso, cortó raíces profundas en su país, incluida la comida cercana a su corazón.

“Me dio mucho gusto porque no había comido comida venezolana en muchos años”, dijo Márquez de pie junto al vendedor, que tenía recipientes de plástico llenos de una variedad de comida venezolana en una calle de un barrio elegante de la Ciudad de México. “Desde que llegué a México había comido pocas arepas, pero me había desconectado por completo de lo que es la comida venezolana”.

Pero si se siente alejada de la cocina de su tierra natal, muchos mexicanos han venido a descubrirla. La diáspora venezolana ha traído tiendas que venden arepas, tortas de maíz rellenas comunes en ese país y la vecina Colombia. También están llenando cada vez más el anhelo de cachitos, empanadas y pastelitos de sus compañeros inmigrantes mientras ganan el dinero que tanto necesitan.
