Hurricane Ian has arrived in Florida and the images are impressive

Hurricane Ian hits Florida with rain and high winds. Several cities like Fort Myers and Naples are already under water.

Concern is growing hour by hour in Florida. Hurricane Ian, classified as category 4 (on a scale of 5), hit this state in the southeastern United States this Wednesday, September 28 at 3 p.m. (9 p.m. in France) after hitting the island of Cuba tuesday. The pictures are impressive.

The images relayed by the media and on social networks show the floods and the trees bent by the force of the wind. They already show the damage that the hurricane will cause. The city of Fort Myers seems particularly affected, as you can see in the tweets below.

This hurricane "will have considerable consequences ," Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has already warned on Wednesday morning. Ian is already causing "   catastrophic marine flooding, winds, and flooding in the Florida peninsula" , estimates the National Hurricane Center (NHC) and is even considering a "historic" storm .

Between 30 and 45 cm of precipitation is expected in central and northeast Florida, and up to 60 cm in some places, according to the NHC. The phenomena of marine submersion could also reach more than five meters on the coasts.

The ocean has withdrawn from the coasts

The streets of Punta Gorda in the south of the state, where a few passers-by were still walking at midday, suddenly emptied Wednesday afternoon as skies turned greyish and downpours intensified, reporters said. from AFP.

Strong winds tore off the branches of many palm trees in the center, even making the electric poles wobble, the cyclone still being about forty kilometers from the city. In Naples, in southwest Florida, images from the MSNBC channel show completely flooded streets and cars floating in the current.

NASA has released a spectacular satellite photo of Ian, which stretches from Cuba to northern Florida. Rain and high winds are battering several towns and twisting palm trees, while the access bridge to Tampa Bay had to be closed to traffic due to rising water levels and gusts.

This disturbing phenomenon had already been observed during Hurricane Irma in 2017, classified as a category 5. In Florida, the sea had retreated for hundreds of meters shortly before the arrival of the hurricane which devastated the state. , but also the West Indies and in particular the French island of Saint-Martin where 11 people died.

According to the poweroutage.us site, more than 668,000 homes were already without electricity in Florida at 2:40 p.m. (8:40 p.m. in Paris). Ahead of Ian's arrival, Tampa airport suspended operations late Tuesday afternoon, while Orlando's did the same at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday. Evacuation orders were given overnight for a dozen counties on the coast.

The dire conditions have already caused the disappearance of migrants, whose boat sank off the coast of Florida, according to border police. Three of them were rescued from the waters, the other 20 are still wanted.

According to the Pentagon , 3,000 National Guard personnel are mobilized in Florida, with another 1,800 on the way. The hurricane should then “  move inland” during the day, and “  emerge over the western Atlantic by Thursday evening” .
