James Gray's 'Armaggedon Time' Tells Everything Trump Hates

James Gray's new film, much more intimate than "The Lost City Z" or "Ad Astra", evokes racism, "white privilege" and the disillusionment of the American dream in the 80s.

“The time of Armaggedon” evoked by James Gray, in homage to a cover of The Clash released in 1979, is not that of the nuclear apocalypse. Rather that of the family apocalypse of his young hero, Paul Graff, in the early 1980s in which the American director transposed all his childhood memories. The film, starring Anne Hathaway and Anthony Hopkins in particular, is in competition for the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival .

After exploring the jungle in The Lost City of Z and outer space in Ad Astra , James Gray returns to the Queens neighborhood of New York where he grew up, to chronicle the coming of age of a teenager, small -son of Ukrainian Jewish immigrants to whom he had already devoted The Immigrant . Back in September 1980 in a public classroom, young Paul Graff (played by Banks Repeta, 14) befriends Johnny Davis (Jaylin Webb, 16), a black boy who lives alone with his grandmother . Together, the duo chained the 400 blows... Until Paul's parents decided to change him from school.
