In India, looters haunted by their crime return stolen statues

One does not steal Hindu idols with impunity. A week after looting a temple in northern India, thugs returned almost all of their loot, explaining in a letter that they couldn't sleep.

One can only imagine the disbelief of police inspector Rajiv Singh, when he found, on the evening of May 16, 2022, in his district of Chitrakoot (Uttar Pradesh, northern India ), fourteen of the sixteen idols stolen a week earlier from a Hindu temple. They had simply been left near the head priest's house, a stone's throw from where they had been stolen.

More disconcerting still, the addition of this anonymous missive, containing the feverish confession of the thieves. They reveal there to be torn from their sleep by frightening nightmares , for seven days. Remorse, curse? They describe a Calvary.  We've had enough. […] We have not been able to sleep, eat or live in peace.
