G7 criticizes India's decision to ban wheat exports

G7 agriculture ministers on Saturday (May 14th) criticized India 's decision to ban wheat exports after a recent heatwave, saying it will only worsen the grain supply crisis already strained with the war in Ukraine .

The world's second-largest wheat producer, India, on Saturday banned exports without special government permission, heightening fears for the world's grain supply.

Launched on February 24, the Russian military offensive is seriously disrupting agricultural activity in the countryside of Ukraine, which before the invasion was the world's fourth largest exporter of corn and is on the way to becoming the third largest exporter of wheat.

Due to the blockade imposed on the country's ports, around 20 tonnes of cereals are waiting in silos to be exported and this year's harvest is threatened.
