The Kolam Tradition

The UAM presents an exhibition on ephemeral art made by women from South India

AlcobendasKolams are an example of cultural practice that represent a beautiful fusion of art and science, religion and philosophy, the eternal and the ephemeral, the material and the spiritual.

The Autonomous University of Madrid offers the opportunity to enjoy this exhibition by Claudia Silva, 'Kolam: an ephemeral art of women from southern India', in the Cantoblanco exhibition hall until April 28.

There is a great variety of kolams: the most traditional in South India is created from points (called pulli), arranged in square, diamond, triangular or free configurations. Then a single, unbroken continuous line (called a kambi) intertwines the points. Such designs are associated with the continuity and eternity of cycles. Other variants include kolams drawn with several closed lines, with lines without points, lines connecting the points, and others with geometric shapes without lines or points. The latter variety often uses bright colors and is called rangoli, being more popular in North India. Symmetrical designs inspired by nature such as fruits, flowers, animals and deities, drawn by freehand, are also reflected.

This daily ritual is practiced by millions of women and girls to invoke divinity, prosperity and harmony, as decoration or announcement of family events: weddings, births, celebrations, etc. Similarly, it is a welcome to other beings such as birds and insects that will feed on the rice flour. Each design will fade over the course of the day, turning these creations into ephemeral art.

At least four dead in Tulsa hospital

At least four people died on Wednesday after a man opened fire at a hospital in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in the southern United States.
